You bring up a subject here which has consumed me since I can remember. Coming from a poor family, one of my early memories was the marshals coming to our door to put us on the street and my promise to myself that I would never let this humiliation happen to me.

Before I finished high school I had my career path planned. Bringing up this subject raises deep regrets too because I discovered a talent and interest in college which I was too inflexible to take a detour for. Still, this interest in occupations led me to develop an original syllabus and course in careers as a business teacher. Then, as a guidance counselor, I always stressed career guidance and was the first counselor to organize a career day at my school.

If I were still at it, I would pin your “Finest Occupations” to my bulletin board. Your piece also made me think of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. A certain Catcher in the Rye as well.
