Marriage in D.C.

March 4, 2010

N.W. WRITES:

While reading the paper today I came across a quote which I found rather disturbing in as much as it is indicative of things to come.Same-sex marriage became legal yesterday in Washington D.C. One hundred and fifty-one homosexual couples showed up to apply for marriage licenses. Four heterosexual couples also applied for a license as well,

including Matt Lawson, 30, and Christine Vander Molen, 27. Vander Molen said she didn’t mind being the “odd couple out” and found it funny when one person looked at them quizzically and asked, “You two are getting married to each other?”

It is a fearful thing indeed when a straight couple is a queer sight to see. Also, I found it rather convenient that the picture of protesters there that day appears to be a shot of the congregation of Westboro Baptist Church, a convenient whipping boy.

I am not familiar with the church. Could you explain?

N.W. writes:

Here’s the Wikipedia article on Westboro Baptist Church.  Its members are quite vocal about their abhorence of homosexuals. Somebody didn’t like this and sent them a pipebomb in the mail and ever since the pastor, Fred Phelps, has been preaching that every IED death suffered by US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan is God’s judgement against America (since the church got an IED in the mail, the IED casualties are God’s way of avenging his righteous people and punishing the U.S.A) They have staged loud protests at the funerals of soldiers and Marines killed by IEDs, including one Marine, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was from the parish I grew up in, St. Johns in Westminster MD. Invariably, Fred Phelps and his church is sued by the families. The church then puts forth a countersuit saying that their First Amendment rights are being infringed upon. They have won a great deal of these suits.

As I said, the congregation of Westboro always make great photo-ops whenever the liberal press wants to remind America of the kind of people who oppose homosexual marriage.
