The Anonymous, Masturbating Father

December 5, 2011

AS DISCUSSED in a previous post, the United States continues to allow men to father children through anonymous sperm donation. This is child abuse, now banned in other countries such as Britain and Australia. In regard to the recent post, Michael D. writes:

Soulless reproduction is a relatively mild way to describe this issue. It is an issue in which both the men and women who participate have serious questions to answer concerning their conduct. Donating sperm to a bank that unmarried women and lesbians can access is a disgusting, deplorable and shameful act. Only a man who loathes himself, lacks dignity and self respect would consider doing such a thing, abandoning responsibility for any unknown children he sires with women who mean nothing to him. The women who access this sperm with the deliberate intention of conceiving and raising a fatherless child should be condemned also.

The whole concept of anonymous fatherhood is anathematic to wholesome family values and the psychological damage it is known to inflict on the children is reason enough to halt this abhorrent practice. It is bad enough for a child to grow up fatherless, let alone deliberately fatherless. To add insult to injury, I cannot imagine the impact on a child when he learns that he was not intentionally conceived in love between his parents, but that his pathetic father was a compulsive masturbator who never even met his mother.

If we wish to strangle the industry that provides sperm donor services, it will be easiest and most fruitful to attack the male side of the equation. Respectable society should severely stigmatise sperm donating and lobby for donor anonymity to be removed, since this will provide a powerful disincentive for men to supply their sperm. By contrast it is much more difficult to persuade lonely women and lesbians to abstain from having children. Several years ago here in Australia the guarantee of anonymity for sperm bank donors was removed following a court decision. Within a short period of time sperm donations fell off a cliff and sperm banks reported severe shortages in its aftermath.

In this previous post, a commenter insistently argues that there is no evidence that children raised through anonymous sperm donation are in any way harmed. I insist that this practice is so inhuman that studies that attempt to quantify psychological damage to offspring are wrong.
