The Thinking

An Advent Carol

December 4, 2017

GABRIEL’S MESSAGE, a Basque carol about the Annuniciation, is performed by Voces8.

The angel Gabriel from heaven came
His wings as drifted snow his eyes as flame
“All hail” said he “thou lowly maiden Mary,
Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

“For known a blessed mother thou shalt be,
All generations laud and honor thee,
Thy Son shall be Emanuel, by seers foretold
Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head
“To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said,
“My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name.”
Most highly favored lady. Gloria!

Of her, Emanuel, the Christ was born
In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn
And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:1
“Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

Thank you for this, Laura. It’s a beautiful rendition. I sing with several groups, one of which is small and informal. We had this piece in our repertoire a few years ago but as in most places, the secular pieces are taking over. One group, however, a part of a large popular orchestra with a wonderful conductor of Japanese origin, always has an audience sing-along to close out the program. This year we lead the audience in six traditional Christmas carols about Christ’s birth! There is hope for
us still!

Laura writes:

I’m glad you liked it. I call it an “Advent Carol” because it is about the Annunciation, but it is not formally recognized as an Advent song.
